After completing his thesis in a novel treatment for age-related macular degeneration, Dean pursued a career in optometry. He has a keen interest in children's vision, glaucoma and dry eye.
He completed his clinical training at The University of Melbourne and interned in Canada and has since conducted further training in behavioural optometry.
Dean consults for the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand and regularly participates in research projects.
He volunteers as a Director's First with the Board of the Royal Flying Doctors Service Victoria.
