International Day of Yoga

Benefits of Yoga

Helps Digestion

Yoga can improve circulation, similar to massaging of the abdominal area. Yoga focuses a lot on strength in the abdomen and this pressure helps to aid digestion. The many twists and deep breaths in yoga expand your diaphragm and help to relax your stomach to reduce tension that may build up after eating. At the same time, your stomach is being toned!

Builds strength

The unique movements in yoga work muscles that are not always engaged in your usual gym class. In one study, 79 adults took part in a series of introductory poses six days a week, for 24 weeks. The participants experienced a significant increase in upper body strength and endurance and the women in the group noticed weight loss and decreased body fat.

Reduces stress and anxiety

Yoga is a mind body practice and considered a mood enhancer. It works you physically, but also works you mentally. Controlling your breathing is an important part of yoga. Yoga teaches that controlling your breathing can help you control your body and quiet your mind. It can often include meditation which attempts to clear the mind, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety.

Helps period pain

Yoga incorporates stretching, flexibility and muscle engagement. Through this, hormones are released that can reduce pain in the body. It can be particularly helpful for period pain, as these cramps are caused by uterus contractions and certain yoga positions can help fight this pain.

Improves sleep quality

Stress and over thinking can result in loss of sleep. Yoga helps to reduce stress and concentrates on regulating thought, which can improve your quality and quantity of sleep. Yoga has been shown to lower cortisol levels in the brain, also known as the ‘stress hormone’ which helps to reduce stress and over thinking, useful for when you need it most – bedtime.
