Recently, there has been a huge popularity increase in natural healthcare and wellbeing. This is great news, meaning all of us are taking active steps to maintaining and improving our health.

People also started taking supplements to make sure they get enough essential nutrients and to maintain or improve their health. But not everyone needs to take supplements. And not all supplements are “user friendly”.

Local supermarkets have a myriad of health supplements – aisles stocked with vitamins and herbs designed to help us “naturally”. I have to be honest, some of these really don’t live up to the hype. When picking supplements without your naturopath’s or doctor’s advice, you need to consider your current health status i.e. if you are currently on medication or have any underlying conditions.

So, rather than going for a quick fix, I’d encourage anyone interested in natural health to see a qualified naturopath. I understand it’s not easy in our time- poor environment. But in the long run, you’ll save yourself money and time. Rather than popping a multitude of pills and potions, your naturopath will give you better care and achieve results faster. And once you’ve visited a naturopath, please tell your GP what supplements you’ve been advised to take. Naturopaths and doctors have an array of information to make sure supplements and medication don’t clash.

There is a great deal of confusion regarding the term “naturopath”. Naturopaths are trained to assess each person holistically. They treat the whole person, not just the symptoms of disease and can recommend dietary, nutritional or herbal supplements that would work best. Unfortunately, naturopath is not a registered profession in Australia (we have no single governing body or association). I’d like to encourage everyone to seek out only qualified naturopaths or complementary therapists who are members of an association body. You can do this by visiting www.atms.com.au. or www.nhaa.org.au.

Some things to be aware of:

    ·Naturopaths will never tell you to stop taking your medications. We may ask you to talk to your GP or, given your permission, we may speak with your GP.

    ·MLM – multi level marketing companies thrive on peddling goods for “health”. Be vigilant, don't rely on advertising. Visit your local naturopath for advice.

    ·Follow your gut instinct. It’s best to go with fewer supplements to assess if there are any side effects. The best naturopaths are able to work with the least supplements, relying on dietary and lifestyle modifications instead, to enact greater, longer- lasting changes.

Don’t follow latest diet trends and superfood supplements. Instead, go back to basics. Eat a variety of locally produced, fresh whole foods instead. You’ll save your money (and your taste buds).
